Chapter 11: Nostalgia

Your Ex-Lover is Dead by Stars

“Where are we going?” I asked Nigel, who was lip-synching to The Eagles’ Hotel California with so much emotion. Gezellig was back in town for a week, and he had just picked me up from the office despite my saying that it was already a bit late for a ‘date.’ Plus, I was due for a Skype call with Spence.

“Come on, Lore. You’ll love where I’ll take you!” was what Nigel said in an attempt to convince me.

Nigel gave me a glance and a small smile, stopping in mid-chorus. I wanted to reach out and just pinch his pinkish cheeks. He looked so handsome wearing glasses instead of contacts. I think I just discovered that I have a weakness for guys wearing eyeglasses.

“What? Don’t stop singing. Carry on, Whitmore,” I said. He continued, making motions with his right hand and I started to crack up. I finally gave in to the urge and reached out to pinch his cheek, and then affectionately did the same with his ear. He sighed contentedly. “Come on, Nigel. Tell me,” I crooned. I knew that kind of lambing worked with him.

“Trix and the rest of Rhythmia are over at the O2, rehearsing for the finale of Pop Sugar Star,” Nigel said, switching off the car radio and finally giving me an answer. “Daniel’s there. He said he’s gonna meet us at the entrance.”

“Ooh!” I said, giddy all of a sudden. Rhythmia, a parallel girl band of Gezellig, was a product of one of the most-watched singing competitions in the UK. They hit it big in the UK, Australia, US, and Japan. Unlike Gezellig, they can dance—these chicks are total performers reminiscent of the Spice Girls but with the Destiny’s Child 90s vibe. They had four members, and one of them was Daniel’s gray-eyed, sassy, and loud long-time girlfriend, Tricia Hemmings. Out of the four members of Rhythmia, she had the voice that I loved the most—it was similar to Daniel’s—and hers was the voice that hit the high notes. She was also able to do a mean rendition of Adele’s Someone Like You.

“Hey, Lore,” Daniel said when we saw him at the backstage entrance. He gave me a peck on the cheek. I was about to ask about Tricia but instead I squealed when someone poked me on my sides. I turned to find Laurence standing there, his almond-shaped eyes crinkling as he smiled.

“Lorin,” he said, winking at me. I was used to Tom being the prankster but not Laurence; he seemed to have an extra bounce in his step that night.

“I didn’t know you’re here, too,” Nigel said. He exchanged their custom handshake with Laurence.

“Lil wanted to watch,” Laurence said with a shrug, and Lila emerged from the backstage door. Lila’s appearance made both me and Nigel a little confused. What was Marcus’ older sister doing here? With Laurence, no less?

“Hey, Lorin,” Lila said cheerfully.

I gave her a peck on the cheek, and she tugged my hand towards the entrance.
